Playing to Win in Grants Strategy

As we prepare to tackle 2025, it’s time to think about how nonprofits can "play to win" in their grants strategy. Inspired by the strategy principles from Playing to Win by A.G. Lafley and Roger L. Martin, here are some key lessons on how nonprofits can work smarter—not harder—in their funding pursuits. With a clear strategy and a grants partner like Carinci Consulting, you can achieve more impactful results in the year ahead.

1. Strategy is About Making Choices: Winning in grants isn’t about chasing every opportunity; it’s about making deliberate, focused choices. By identifying the right funding opportunities—those that align with your mission and have a strong chance of success—you can maximize your efforts. In 2025, let’s focus on saying “no” to what doesn’t align so you can say “yes” to the grants that truly matter.

2. Play to Win, Not Just to Play: Submitting grant proposals for the sake of staying busy isn’t a winning strategy. To truly "win," nonprofits must craft compelling, differentiated proposals that stand out. With Carinci Consulting, we can help you develop strategies that go beyond participation and aim squarely for success.

3. Focus on Your Stakeholders: Effective grant strategies are centered on your stakeholders: funders and the communities you serve. By deeply understanding funder priorities and demonstrating how your work aligns with their goals, you can build stronger, more meaningful connections. In 2025, let’s put your stakeholders at the heart of your grants strategy.

4. Develop Core Capabilities: Winning grants requires building the unique skills and resources to deliver on your mission. Whether it’s sharpening your storytelling, enhancing your data collection, or improving collaboration across teams, Carinci Consulting can help you identify and cultivate the capabilities that make your proposals stand out.

5. Align Your Systems: From program planning to evaluation metrics, every aspect of your nonprofit’s operations should support your grants strategy. In 2025, let’s ensure your processes and systems are aligned with your strategic goals to streamline your efforts and improve your results.

6. Make Strategy Iterative: Winning in grants requires continuous learning and adaptation. With every proposal and funder interaction, there are opportunities to refine your approach. Carinci Consulting can help you establish a dynamic strategy that evolves as you learn, ensuring sustained success.

7. Lead or Lose: To succeed in 2025, nonprofits need strong leadership willing to make tough decisions—especially about where to focus resources. Whether you’re leading your team or seeking external guidance, decisive leadership is key to achieving your funding goals.Moving Forward

At Carinci Consulting, we’re here to help you navigate these principles and build a strategy that positions your nonprofit to "win" in 2025. Together, we can make deliberate choices, play to win, and align your efforts with impactful results.
