Insights from Reviewing Federal Proposals

Recently, I had the opportunity to serve as a reviewer for the Department of Education FY2024 Comprehensive Centers (CC) Program (Assistance Listing Number 84.283B). This experience was a valuable reminder of the importance of considering multiple sides of the grant process.

While I often assist clients with submissions, taking the time to review proposals a few times a year keeps me sharp and provides a fresh perspective that I can bring back to my work. One key takeaway from this round of reviews was the challenge my fellow panelists and I faced when evaluating a particularly lengthy application. Despite being nearly 200 pages long—significantly longer than others we reviewed—we struggled to find the necessary evidence to support specific evaluation sub-criteria. Here are some critical lessons from this experience:

Good Organization is Key: Even the most detailed proposals can fall short if they aren't well-organized. Ensure your proposal follows the specific section order and content guidelines, especially for federal submissions.

Follow Guidelines Meticulously: Adhering to the prescribed format and structure is crucial. This helps reviewers easily navigate your proposal and find the information they need.

Provide Compelling and Specific Examples: Generic statements are not enough. Back up your claims with concrete examples and data that directly address the evaluation criteria.

Consider Serving as a Reviewer: Gaining insight from the reviewer's perspective can be incredibly enlightening. It can help you understand how proposals are evaluated and highlight common pitfalls to avoid in your future submissions.

Taking these lessons to heart can enhance the clarity and effectiveness of your proposals, increasing your chances of success. I encourage you to consider serving as a reviewer if you have the opportunity—it’s an invaluable experience that can significantly improve your grant writing skills.

📣Calling all researchers, faculty, and administrators looking to acquire or develop multi-user research instruments critical to the advancement of science and engineering!

If you are in need of or developing instruments that are, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs this program could be what you, your students, and the field need to advance cutting-edge research.

Proven track record: In the 2023 MRI competition, we helped multiple teams successfully secure funding to advance their research and teaching.
