📊Lessons Learned: The Power of Personal Connections in Grant Funding

This month, as we explore the theme of connection, a key takeaway from Instrumentl’s “Where Is The Most Funding? Grant Funding Across The U.S.” report is the value of personalizing your approach to funders. Successful grant seekers don’t just submit applications; they invest time in understanding the funder’s mission, priorities, and past giving history. Establishing meaningful relationships with grantmakers can make a huge difference in how your proposal is received.

Here are a few actionable steps for grant seekers:

Do Your Homework: Before applying, research the funder thoroughly. Understand their strategic goals and tailor your proposal to align with them.

Initiate Early Conversations: Don’t wait until the application deadline to reach out. Introduce your organization and its mission early. Building rapport can often make your proposal stand out from the crowd.

Keep the Lines of Communication Open: Regular updates on the progress of your programs—even after receiving a grant—help maintain a strong connection with funders for future opportunities.

Personalize Your Proposal: It’s not just about following guidelines; it’s about showing funders how your work will advance their mission. Demonstrating a shared commitment can turn a good proposal into a great one.
